Patrick Mullett, MD - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Mullett is from Alaska, completed his undergraduate and medical school education in Reno, Nevada and is now in his third and final year of Emergency Medicine training at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, South Campus. He will be moving back to Reno in July of this year to begin his career as an Emergency Medicine physician at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. He traveled to Santiago, Chile (8/29-9/25/2022) for an international Emergency Medicine and Ultrasound conference hosted by UC | Chile.
He is passionate about outdoor recreation, high-quality patient care, Emergency Medicine, and learning the Spanish language. This rotation allowed him to progress his Spanish learning by attending a world-class conference that was largely spoken in Spanish, meeting physicians from Chile and shadowing them in the hospital, and by immersing himself in the Spanish-speaking Chilean culture for the month while he completed independent Spanish learning. He is very grateful to the University of Arizona and the scholarship he received to make this unforgettable experience possible.
Ricardo Reyes, MD – 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Reyes is a Family Medicine resident in his third and final year of residency at the University of Arizona - Tucson Family and Community Medicine Program. He attended University of Arizona - Tucson College of Medicine where he had the opportunity to participate in global health externships in Guatemala and Colombia. He returned to Guatemala from April 10 to May 23, 2023 to work at Hospitalito Atitlan, a small non-government non-profit hospital that partners local medical professionals and international volunteers in order to provide care to its community.
Maria Ruiz, MD - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Ruiz is a third-year resident at the University of Arizona South Campus Family Medicine Residency program. She is originally from Dallas, Texas, and a first-generation physician in her family. She was drawn to Tucson for the full spectrum training program with an emphasis on rural health and its unique proximity to the US-Mexico border. She plans to continue practicing full scope family medicine in her future practice and continuing to pursue interests in women's health, global health, and marginalized communities. Her global health rotation was in Tanzania (2/12/23 – 3/11/23) where she participated in the hospital with pediatric, obstetric, and adult medicine.
Jack Wagoner, MD - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Wagoner is a fourth-year resident in Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona. He is originally from Nebraska and fell in love with global health when he was in medical school. From March 10 – 25, 2023 he travelled to Luska, Zambia to work at the University Teaching Hospital. After residency, he will be doing a fellowship in Pain Medicine at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
