Nasrin Akter - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Akter is a third year Family Medicine resident who was born in Bangladesh and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Akter's passion for global health stemmed from her first-hand experience witnessing the challenges of accessing high-quality healthcare in her home country, a low-income nation with one of the highest population densities in the world. She chose to complete her training at the South Campus family medicine program because of its dedication to underserved populations and communities, its focus on broad-spectrum family medicine training, and its unique and comprehensive global health program. She will complete a month-long global health rotation from (01/14/2024 - 02/09/2024) in Cox's Bazaar at the MedGlobal Maternity and Birth Center serving the Rohingya refugees, a state-less population who have been persecuted and driven out of neighboring Myanmar. She also plans to rotate through a hospital in rural Tanzania from 05/06/2024 - 06/02/2024, a region with high maternal and infant mortality rates. She plans to continue global health work in her native country, Bangladesh, after graduating.
Daniel Anderson - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Daniel Anderson is a third year Family Medicine resident concentrating in Global Health and Integrative Medicine. As an undergraduate, he majored in Chinese and studied Chinese medicine in China and further grew his love for global medicine working in the refugee student-run free clinic in medical school. Currently, Daniel is thrilled to be in Tucson for residency where he can work with the local refugee population and study under so many passionate global health advisors. He is extremely grateful to be a recipient of the GME Global Health Travel Scholarship and will be using this assistance to work in Ecuador, 3/11/24 – 4/6/24, to further his global medicine knowledge and Spanish language ability. Daniel looks forward to giving back to the international community and the underserved in his local community.
Alana Behrens - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Behrens is from Tucson, Arizona and completed her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering in the first class offering this degree at the University of Arizona. She also earned a minor in psychiatry during her studies. She attended Quinnipiac School of Medicine in Connecticut and particularly enjoyed their focus on community health. She is now in her third year of residency back in her hometown of Tucson through the Banner University Medical Center South Campus Emergency Medicine Residency Program. She matched into the Ultrasound Fellowship at the University of Arizona this upcoming year and is also working locally in Nogales and Bisbee.
She is passionate about community health and improving her Spanish in order to provide excellent care to her patients. She has volunteered in Arizona including through the Habitat for Humanity store, the Alternative Breaks Program through her medical school. This program allowed her to immerse herself in a primarily Spanish-speaking environment and the culture of Costa Rica. She is thankful for the opportunity through the University of Arizona and the Kaimas Foundation for making this amazing experience possible.
Kayla Bird - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship

Dr. Bird has always had a passion for travel and experiencing new cultures (especially food). She was able to do her first international rotation in Ghana in 2019 through her medical school, and her passion for Global Health has continued to grow since then. This year, she is excited to announce that she will be travelling to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands from January 28 through February 24, 2024 working both in the community hospital and pediatric outpatient clinics alongside another University of Arizona pediatrics alumnus (Dr. Amanda Holloway).
Megan Garrett - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Megan Garrett is a third-year family medicine resident who is planning to travel to Nkololo, Tanzania from 5/6/24 to 6/2/24 to work alongside the physicians there in the maternal, pediatric, and adult wards. She plans to learn from this experience and continue to provide full spectrum family medicine care both locally and globally upon graduation from residency.
Amanda McKeith - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Amanda McKeith is a third year Family Medicine resident in the South Campus Track at the University of Arizona. Originally from Michigan, Dr. McKeith has loved becoming part of the Tucson Community, caring for refugees, exploring rural Arizona, and becoming involved in health policy. She had planned to travel to Ecuador in January for a medical Spanish elective but due to a state of emergency declared by the Ecuadorian president she had to pivot to a local elective here in Tucson. She volunteered with Casa Alitas, conducted a research study focused on Advanced Care Planning in Refugees and took medical Spanish classes online. She is grateful for the global health scholarship which will help support her upcoming rural medicine elective in Sitka, Alaska. Dr. McKeith plans to continue practicing rural medicine upon completion of residency.
Georgiana Yang - 2023 GME Resident Global Health Travel Scholarship
Dr. Yang is a Family Medicine resident in her third and final year of residency at the University of Arizona - Tucson Family and Community Medicine Program. She is originally from New York City and is passionate about global health and women's health. She rotated at the Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu, Ghana in October 2023 working with the obstetrics department, and is excited to return abroad for a rotation in Manthali, Nepal in April 2024 (4/8-5/3).
