Spencer Rushton, DO - 2024 Tracy Carroll Resident Global Health Award
Global health became one of my major interests soon after I graduated high school and is the primary reason I decided to become a physician. I am most interested in sustainable development and international medical education. I have been blessed with many opportunities to work with underserved and resource-poor populations, primarily in South and Central America, as well as here in the USA. Most recently, in 2023, I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and work with residents in a newly established Emergency Medicine residency in Guatemala City. While living abroad for multiple years in South America, I became a fluent Spanish speaker and learned about the various healthcare systems and medical education provided there. I have been the Executive Director over a Spanish translating organization, Executive Director over a medical student run free clinic, held multiple leadership positions in the Emergency Medicine Residents Association International Medicine Committee, and participated in the University of Arizona Spanish Language/Health Care Distinction Track.
